The One

After an intense month and a half of work, this recording for my upcoming LP is completed.   It is titled “The One”.  I have never challenged myself this much.  We kept changing the melodies and revising the lyrics to work better with the production.   I have never made so many modifications to lyrics on the fly as I have with this song.  It was unnerving to recognize that a particular phrase sounded weak or did not connect well with other parts of the song…  all while being in the studio.    I had to dig deeper than ever and pull from a lifetime of listening and writing songs to figure out what worked, but  a few lucky times, the lyrics emerged straight from my subconscious into the microphone.

“You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” Michael Jordan

This month I took a deep breath and dove in to re-recording a song called “On The Line”.  I just knew I could make it sound better than how I had recorded it three years ago.   My intuition was right, as this new version has become one of my favorite songs.

Inspiration came by playing it live many times.   Little by little, I began trying different chords and melodies to see what worked.    This new version is posted on my home page.

I think Michael Jordan had it right.  We can’t always wait until we are “ready”.  Jumping into the fray a bit too soon can sometimes be a good thing.
